>> overnight, the deceased suspect arrived at the hospital with multiple gunshot wounds. >> a dangerous and volatile night that continues to keep bosstonians on edge this morning. >> reporter: that manhunt is fanning out across the region. some nine or ten officers involved. the hunt is on for the second suspect who police call a terrorist who wants to kill people. that's the story live in bossen to. i'm chris pollone, now, back to you. nbc news is reporting the suspects are brothers from russia near the region close to chechnya. a 26-year-old tamerlan tsarnaev. the surviving suspect is this guy on the right here, 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev.

the two had been living in this country for at least ten years. the fbi released video and pictures of the suspects seen carrying backpacks believed to have contain explosives. the man in the dark cap is dead. the man in the white hat is still at-large we are hearing from an eyewitness in watertown. andrew kitzenberg being evacuated from his home. he said he saw two men taking cover behind an suv firing shots at officer 70-80 yards down the street. he also saw the men using explosives. >> i was about 35, 40 feet away. it looked to resemble a pressure cooker, what i've seen from other pictures online in the last few days. i saw them light this bomb.

they threw it toward the officers. it only got maybe 15-20 yards down. it wasn't very close to the officers. it really created a significant decoy. there was smoke that covered our entire street. at that point, one of the shooters ran toward the officers while still engaging in gunfire. while he was still shooting at them, a few seconds later, the second shooter got back into the suv and turned it around and went full speed into the police officers. just before he started charging at the officers in the vehicle, the first shooter that was running at them was taken down. i didn't have a clear view into how that happened. i couldn't tell whether he was shot or whether he was tackled. the footage may seem like he was shot. i couldn't see clearly. at that time, the second shooter

was basically charging into the officer's vehicles at full speed. it went right in between them, two or three officers cars taking out their doors and windows and side swiping them. ultimately, getting through them and moving past our block oand out of my vehicle. it is stunning to hear all these accounts. we are just getting an a.p. news alert right now. this is from the father of the boston bombing suspect. the father is saying that his son is an accomplished medical student and he is calling him a true angel. >> we want to go live to watertown, to our terry mcsweeney. we spoke to you about 15, 20 minutes ago. you said this is the most police presence you have ever seen in your entire career as a reporter. >> reporter: now, i'm in the largest police presence. in the past few minutes, we have had more police cars pour into

watertown from the city of arlington. it is getting bigger. as i'm standing here talking to you, i can see a police helicopter sitting in the same general area over watertown. it was parked for a bhil while there and now it is moving around. suspect number two, police believe they know where he is hold up. excuse me if this is a repetition of what you just heard. i was unable to hear the network reports you received a moment ago. we are receiving a report that two people have been taken into custody in boston, not suspects. taken into custody. also, we are told that the person with whom these brothers lived has been taken into custody for questioning. the area above here in watertown is a no-fly zone.

so it is one police helicopter. that is what's going on right now by f.a.a. decree. it is a rapidly changing situation. things going on in boston right now. as we were driving from watertown to boston, we saw a street blocked off, special operations, big black truck in front of the house. ten police cars. all kinds of commotion going on there. there is a number of things going on. how many of these things are going to be fanning out to somebody taken into custody. it turns out to be a suspect or provides key information. we are going to have to wait and see about that. in watertown right now, massive, massive police presence. i'm talking about cities from all over massachusetts including boston and watertown.

a helicopter hovering overhead and a report from pete williams. he has been right on this one from the beginning. they do believe they know where suspect number two is holed up here in the watertown. >> not just people but also mass transit through this area. everything shut down. terry mcsweeney, thank you so much. we will be checking with you in just a bit. it is so interesting to see the a.p. news report that we are getting in about that suspect they are looking for, dzhokhar tsarnaev. his father is claiming his son is an angel, a second-year medical student. he called him a very intelligent boy and expected him to come on holidays here. the "associated press" reporting that the suspect at-large was awarded a $2500 scholarship from cambridge,

welcome back. 6:14. a quick check of today's stories. >> the 11-year-old boy from martinez wounded in the boston marathon on monday received a special visit from first lady, michelle obama. he came to aaron hern's bedside yesterday. his mother says he has taken a huge step forward in his progress, having all tubes removed and being able to sit up and talk plans for extra security at tonight's giants game. they are ramping up the security effort at at&t park for the next six home games.

the giants say plans should plan to arrive extra early to get through security checks at the entrance. a teenage boy accused of shooting and killing an off-duty san jose paramedic will be formally charmed as an adult. prosecutors say 16-year-old burton was a triggerman. they have been charged in juvenile court in connection with the killing. "today in the bay" bob redell has the latest on the boston marathon suspect hunt. what have you learned? >> we are getting a better idea of the one brother still alive, the suspect. the a.p. has interviewed the father. i know you guys are mentioning this before. he calls his son a true angel. a classmate from high school was interviewed. she said he was super normal but then you hear from the uncle who says that his nephew was a

loser. i'm referring to the other brother. when he heard he was shot and killed during a shootout with police overnight in watertown, massachusetts, he said, he, quote, deserved it. so we are getting these both sides of the story from family and friends. right now, i don't know if we can put up an image of the brothers. yesterday afternoon, the fbi put out these surveillance pictures of these bombing suspects. right there is the one who is still arrive. his name is dzhokhar tsarnaev. his brother, tamerlan tsarnaev, born in russia, the one that was shot and killed. not only did he die from gunshot wounds. it is also possible he died from a bomb blast. they believe he had a bomb wrapped around his waist. they found shrapnel and there was a report they were lighting and throwing a bomb at the

police during the shootout. they are very concerned, because they are considering him to be highly armed and dangerous given the fact that he might have a bomb or bombs on him. we heard enter one terrorist expert who refers to him as a tier one terrorist, meaning he is just that dangerous. he is the top of the cream of the worst if you will. they call him -- they call those type a bomb chucker. so, because of this, because they don't know where he is, they have locked down the entire town of boston and the surrounding communities of watertown and cambridge, some other neighborhoods. they have shut down the transit. they are asking people to shelter in place. do not come outside, do not open your door unless it is law enforcement this is a serious situation. we are taking it seriously. we are asking the public to take it seriously by following simple

instructions. we have every aspect we can possibly muster on the ground right now. they are doing a terrific job and working in concert with each other. we are going to need the public to help us help them stay safe. within the past hour, law enforcement did surround a home in watertown not far from where the shootout took place. they did take a man and woman into custody. it's not clear what relation, if any, they have to the tsarnaev brothers or to this case. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> i want to quickly check the forecast now with meteorologist, christina loren. weather will play a factor. you made it to friday. it's been a rough week. i have good news in the weather department. 6:18. let's take you alive and talk about what's happening. run for boston in the building is pretty comfortable out there. temperatures today are going to be on the warm side.

plenty of low 80s, 79 in napa. 80 in concord. christie smith will be live in san francisco with a report on the efforts we are making in the bay area. a run happening at 7:00 a.m. as we head through the weekend, temperatures on the warm side. 81 degrees friday, into the weekend. temperatures stay warm. let's check your driver with mike. we are talking about this area off of the castro valley "y," mission boulevard, cherryland, part of hayward, looking at slowing as you approach cherry. a two-block area closed between medford and blossom. that's a major issue. you are going to have to use foothill boulevard to or from. you will have to avoid that because of a crash. a vehicle hit a ped a little while ago. there is a closure for that two-block area. they are waiting for the coroner to arrive. this could cause quite a stir. this is just north of the

hayward loop there. meanwhile, 880 through that area moves smoothly. no big deal. you have the crowd coming over from the altamont pass. you know about that. that's going to mean more slowing through 680. we come through sunol for much of the morning commute. we will take you farther north on the map. west 80 as you are coming out of dix son and over toward vacaville. we had a logging truck around a car wedged underneath it, fortunately, no major injuries reported. we will look at the bay bridge toll plaza as we show a smooth flow of traffic up to the toll plaza. we have all of the lanes backing up. a smooth drive, no surprises. the san mateo bridge with a

of him with the white cap. he is known as the white cap suspect. take a look at screen. this is who police are looking for on the east coast. >> considered to be very armed, very dangerous. what's interesting, we are haeiha hearing from some of his family members. >> harsh words from his uncle. we have been monitoring news radio. wdz has been talking on the phone with the uncle and has e-mailed him a picture. he said he didn't think the two brothers had been students in massachusetts for quite some time. he remembers the older brother as, quote, a loser. he said of the pair, i wish they had never been born. wdz says one of the sources is quite dependable if you want your source on the internet.

mcsweeney. what are you seeing out there? >> reporter: i see the police helicopter that we have been mentioning continues to stay overhead in a certain area of watertown. as you mentioned, police believe they know where suspect number two is holed up right now. it is not a matter of going in and getting him. an extremely dangerous man. possibly he has explosives tied to him. he threw some, one with his brother, at the police as they chased him. a bomb squad truck comes through. another vehicle with lights flashing. the suspect certainly had explosives last night as they were chased to waltertown after

killing. it was confirmed after the suv, they got another pickup truck and drove it here. suspect number one, dead. suspect number two believed to be here in watertown. i keep watching this police helicopter hovering over a particular area. investigators think they know where this person is. to say he was armed and dangerous, he may be armed and dangerous and loaded with explosives and extremely dangerous. they think they know where he is. other information i am getting is that two people taken into custody. nbc news is reporting two people taken into custody. that would be the location where the two brothers lived. we are hearing that a third person has been taken into custody. none of these people are being described as suspects as far as i know.

people taken into custody as the investigation spreads. anybody in lines of these two suspects is being taken in to find out what it is they know about these two men and their paths and what they were doing in this country and who they were associating with. the story here in watertown, the media here at this corner. this is where the governor and the police chief, ed davis, of boston, came, maybe an hour ago now. maybe a little longer than that. to announce that the city of boston, 625,000 people in addition to the couple hundred thousand people in cambridge and surrounding areas, maybe a total of 900,000 people are on a shelter in place order. i have never heard of twhaun large in my life. they didn't know where the suspect was. they may not be positive of where he is right now. if he go escape and get him to

i live in watertown. when i started hearing the gun shots and explosions, i recognized that something was really wrong. >> we spent about 10, 15 minutes trying to resuscitate this patient with a number of procedures being done that were unsuccessful. at 1:35, he was pronounced. >> other doctors knew something big was happening as there was extra police presence traveling with the suspect. watertown resident, andrew k kitzenberg watched it unfold. >> i heard gunshots and walked over carefully and stoolt behind the walls and looked out my window. i saw a couple of shooters in between a sedan and a black mercedes benz suv. there were two shooters taking

cover and shooting westward. >> he posted numerous photos, including this one, it showed a bullet hole through the calendar. luckily, he was not heard. this shows a bomb squad robot inspecting a car involved in that shooting. he posted these moments after authorities searched backpacks at 10:30 last night local time, a 7-eleven in cambridge was robbed. afterward, an officer was shot on m.i.t. campus and died. police spotted that suv in watertown leading to a chase and a shootout.

one suspect was shot and killed. one was shot and injured. he is in critical condition now. the second suspect, as we've been saying, was able to get away. he is still on the loose. we are still goating this from nbc bay area pete williams. they are concerned that other accomplices may be involved. that's why they are being so careful. let's get a look at the forecast. we have a pretty good-looking day shaping up. no flight delays out of ssf. we have some delays in laguardia. you want to take caution if you are trying to head to the north eeflt, you might run into some pretty significant delays. we have a potent weather system heading that way. at 7:00 a.m. today, people are gathering at the fairy building, running for boston in solidarity. count on a cool start to the morning. highs today will be warm later on this afternoon. we are slated to hit the 80s.

good morning. bob redell live from the nbc bay area newsroom. overnight while you were sleeping, one of the boston marathon bombing suspects is dead. the other one is still at-large considered to be very dangerous, which is why the city of boston and the surrounding area has effectively been locked down. law enforcement is trying to find them. this is just coming from pete williams of nbc news. last night, police in watertown, massachusetts, got into a

shootout with both suspects. they ever both brothers from chechnya. you might recall the surveillance photos. the one in the black cap, 26-year-old sam german tsarnaev, ted not only of a gunshot wounds but shrapnel wounds and thermal wounds indicating he might have been hurt by an explosive device. the brothers did reportedly throw at least one bomb during a shootout with police. the suspect in the white cap, he is 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev. he is the one that we are still looking for. he told the "associated press" that he was an angel. police ask asked you to shelter

night. it started around 10:00 when there was an armed robbery of a 7-eleven in the boston area. a carjacking led police to watertown, massachusetts, about eight miles from here. that's where police cornered these two suspects, brothers, 19 and 26 years old. they engage in a shootout on a quiet street. the 26-year-old, older brother, shot and killed. the other one, the 19-year-old, got into a car and was able to escape. they believe authorities know where this us is spesuspect is are trying to capture him without anybody getting hurt. we are seeing amtrak trains between boston and providence being searched, hearing about vehicles being stopped and being

checked. pete williams says that authorities are afraid this lone suspect is now working with somebody, perhaps some accomplices or family members or friends. so they are using an abundance of caution in checking out everybody's story regardless of their connection to make sure this is just not bigger than just single person. a bevy of activity going on both here and boston and in watertown. people walked in their homes awaiting the outcome of this manhunt. terry mcqueeny was in watertown. >> only about eight miles away. the police presence, you have never seen anything like it there? >> reporter: it is a crazy scene here. ambulances and police just moments ago racing by me. here come some more. i don't know where they are going. it is just symptomatic of what's been going on here in watertown

all morning long. take a look at fresh video from morning. these are pictures from watertown. if you are wondering why approximately 1 billion people are under a shelter and plays order including boston, this is why. they are looking for suspect number two. they believed he is armed, dangerous and likely equipped with explosives and bombs and he has shown that overnight by throwing that at police during a car chase, a vehicle chase after two suspects allegedly killed a police officer. you see the s.w.a.t. team members going in with their shields ready or their weapons ready. they were evacuating people. anyone they haven't gotten to, they are asking to shelter in place and do not open your door unless you are absolutely positive that's a police officer on the other side of the door. the s.w.a.t. team taking people out. i have seen video of people

running out of their houses with their children. that is it. no possessions. don't grab anything. just get out of here. police presence extremely heavy. overhead right now, as has been going on all morning, this police helicopter of watertown, a no-fly edict of the faa. circling the very same area for a couple of hours. right now, it is circling the threat to people in watertown and boston, which is so fwrat that mass transit has been stopped and cab service has been halted. they do not want this person to get out and have any means whatsoever to get around. he has shown that he is quite capable of carjacking as he has done, as they have done twice. suspect number one killed.

reportedly with explosives strapped on him and run over by his brother as his brother was escaping. i don't know if suspect number one was dead already. he was taken to a hospital where a doctor said he had numerous bullet wounds and what appeared to be the results of an explosion on his person. he was torn up badly and died early this morning. last night, the scene out here as they chased these suspects. back up to the beginning. they went to the m.i.t. campus, shot and killed an m.i.t. police officer, car jacked a mercedes suv and were driving away from police who had spotted them. they were throwing explosives out of the car window. there was a fire fight later on

in watter in watertown. another picture, from late last night when the two suspects robbed 7-eleven. that began the whole chain of events. here in watertown, according to "associated press," the boy's father in russia has been a contact. he described his son as an angel and an accomplished medical center. 900,000 people under a shelter in place order. people being advised, do not open your door under any circumstances unless you are positive there is a cop on the other side of the door. transit is shut down. i will told it has been stopped as well.

i believe sthe hathey have the n where this person is. this brand new into our newsroom. according to authorities in boston, police are officially looking for two suspects, 19-year-old dzhokhar tsarnaev and someone identified as an accomplice. we will stay on that. we are hearing from an eyewitness that watched the shootout unfold from his apartment window. earlier tood, he told nbc he went to his room after hearing gunshots. he saw two men taking cover behind a car and firing at officers. >> i didn't notice the bullet holes until an hour and a half

later. then, we saw the significant hole through the westward wall in aur house. it went right through my roommate's calendar and right through the chair, his computer desk chair. the slug, which we haven't touched, is still sitting at the foot of his bed. the gun fire took place for at least a few minutes while they were utilizing explosives. when it came closer to the end, they used what seemed ton a larger bomb. from my view, my bedroom window on the third floor of our building, i was about 35, 40 feet away. it look ed to resemble a pressue cooker. one ran toward the officers while engaging in gunfire. while he was still shooting at them, a few seconds later, the second shooter got back into the
